“Why is your blog called NoMoreMovies? Don’t you like movies?”
“Are you never going to watch a movie, like, ever again?”
I get these questions all the time. Want to know why my blog is called NoMoreMovies? Here’s your chance!
Let’s get one thing out of the way: I still watch movies! (audience gasps… “So it’s all a lie?!”)
Not really… but my elevator pitch needs some improvement. Let me give it another shot:
The elevator pitch
NoMoreMovies means cutting down on passive entertainment to make room for more rewarding and valuable experiences such as…
- nurturing your creativity
- traveling the world
- paying attention to your health
- giving back to community
- maintaining good relationships
- getting inspired by reading (non-fiction)
In short: it’s about living life to the fullest.
But why pick on movies? Why are they the bad guy?
It’s something personal. Prior to starting this blog, I spent most of my time and money hoarding and (re)watching films …and games and books and comics…
Blockbusters, sequels and reboots… Six months after seeing them in the cinema I just had to add them to my ever growing collection of DVD’s and Blu-Rays. Some I watched up to five times while others are still sitting on my shelves, wrapped in plastic.
The former is a waste of time… the latter a waste of money. I can’t tell you which is worse.
In reality I was ticking off never-ending watch- and playlists in a robotic fashion, barely realizing that somewhere along the way I stopped having fun.
Life shouldn’t be like that, right?
Visiting Machu Picchu
It took a long trip to Peru and a visit to Machu Picchu for me to realize I didn’t need or miss any of my passive hobbies. In fact the opposite was true: I never felt more liberated and alive away from it all. Amazing landscapes and energetic people inspired me to put more effort into my old hobbies: photography and writing.
A few months later NoMoreMovies was born. I had my creative outlet.
Follow the Sun
To tell you the truth, I was aiming for “FollowTheSun.com“, after the inspiring Xavier Rudd song. Part of me wanted to start a full blown travel and photography blog. Unfortunately, that domain name would have cost me 500 dollars. Not an option!
In the end “NoMoreMovies” is more appropriate for the de-cluttering and transitional phase I find myself in right now… and I thought it had a nice ring to it.
That’s all there is to it 🙂
Still love movies though…
I have always loved movies and I will continue to do so until the day I die… I saw well over 1500 of them and if you’re looking for recommendations (or better yet: what NOT to see), check out my reviews and ratings of each and every one of them.
So yes, Sofie and me ocassionally watch a movie, but we choose them more carefully. Recently we saw gems (and classics) like: Lion, Captain Fantastic (= no superhero movie! see trailer below, highly recommended), Mr Holmes, Apocalypse Now, In the mood for love, Invictus, Rebel without a Cause and Lala Land.
NOW THESE ARE MOVIES STILL WORTH WATCHING:
So, should you come looking for me, you probably won’t find me in front of the telly. More likely I’ll be:
- writing in my new minimalist office at home
- shooting or editing some photos
- visiting a new city or village
- out for a hike through nature
- hanging out with some friends
- reading non-fiction
- sweating my *ss off at Move to Happiness (what’s in a name?)
And it feels so much better! 🙂
